Houseplant & Indoor Plant Care

Aloe Vera Care Guide

Aloe's like plenty of light, but limited direct sunlight. The leaves can drop in lower light conditions. Rotate regularly to ensure even growth. Cacti soil is best for Aloe, or a mix of regular house plant compost with added drainage such as perlite. Allow the soil to completely dry out between waterings.

What is the Aloe Vera Known For?

Aloe Vera is best known for its gel-filled leaves that have been used for centuries for their soothing, healing, and hydrating properties. It's a staple in skin care and alternative medicine due to its potent anti-inflammatory and regenerative qualities.

What Is the History of the Aloe Vera?

Historically, Aloe Vera has been used as a medicinal plant since ancient times, with evidence of its use by the Sumerians and Egyptians, who called it the "plant of immortality." It has a long-standing tradition in herbal remedies and has been depicted in ancient carvings and writings.

Where Does the Aloe Vera Originate?

Aloe Vera is believed to originate from the Arabian Peninsula, but due to its ease of cultivation and popularity, it now grows in sunny climates worldwide, from Africa to the Mediterranean, and in many homes in the UK as a houseplant.

How Do You Care for a Aloe Vera?

Proper care for an Aloe Vera plant includes positioning it in a place with bright, indirect sunlight and watering it sparingly – only when the soil is completely dry. It's a drought-tolerant plant that prefers warmer temperatures and can suffer from overwatering.

Are Aloe Vera Toxic to Pets?

Aloe Vera is not safe for pets if ingested. The gel is commonly used for topical applications, but the plant's leaves contain aloin, which can be toxic to cats and dogs if consumed.
